âWHAT NEWS FROM THE CONTINENT?â Hardin repeated Wilsonâs question. He didnât sound too impressed with it. âWell, itâs definitely better than yours.â
Constanza stepped away from Wilson. She shook her head, silently telling him to let her do all the talking.
Instead of pouting or making a snide comment, all the man did was point at the flaming wreck, then to his wristwatch and then finally to the car. It was clear what he was saying and with a nod, Constanza walked over to the passengerâs side of the sedan.
âIf anyone can be the judge of that,â Constanza said, getting into the vehicle at the same time as Wilson, âitâd be you. What did you find out?â
Unlike when sheâd been to Mexico City, where most people refused to wear seatbelts for some unknown reason, Guadalajara had a strict policy about wearing them and both she and Wilson strapped themselves in.
Using her hand, she gestured for Wilson to get them moving and he did without hesitation.
âKnowing that there is definitely a connection between Weisz, Marquez and the Sinaloa Cartel makes my findings all the more interesting,â Hardin began. He didnât sound as annoyed, which was good, but Constanza didnât want to risk adding to his frustration. âActually, itâs more like the lack of any findings.â
âDid you hear that right?â Constanza mouthed the question at Wilson.
Next to her, he nodded. He had heard the same thing and both of them were confused. How could not finding anything be good?
âWhat do you mean?â Constanza asked Hardin. âI thought you found something.â
âThe lack of evidence is evidence itself,â her handler replied. He spoke with the air of a wise old man. âWhatâs the surest way to track down someone involved in something nefarious?â
The Aveo slowed as it neared the intersection that would take them back onto the Fed 15D. Checking each way, Wilson pulled out and took them right. Within ten seconds, they had matched speed and Constanza knew where they were heading.
Back to Guadalajara and the safe house.
Behind them, the thick dark plumes of smoke from the burning car wafted high into the air. Theyâd been lucky with that. So far, neither of them had seen any signs of law enforcement racing towards them.
That was one of the few things she loved about her country. There wasnât much in the way of traffic cameras to monitor the comings and goings of cars. If Guadalajara had such a system in place, their lives would be much more interesting.
âEveryone knows that,â Wilson said, answering their handlerâs question. âItâs the oldest cliche in the book.â
âWhich is?â Hardin asked.
Realizing what he was playing at, Constanza chuckled, then answered. âFollow the money.â
âExactly! So, after our last chat, I decided to do some digging into the late Emiliano Marquez and one Carlos Zeni.â
Hearing the second name, Constanza turned away from Wilson. Her eyes stared out the window at the other cars, buses, trucks and bikes zipping past them. Everything beyond that, the trees and buildings, were like a blur. Blinking away the tears that stung her eyes, Constanza fought to keep herself under control.
